A Rain of Thorns by Jennifer Grayson

This novella is the first of a series of books called The Heart of the Savage. Mattie is a young woman whose mother died when she was an infant. Her father brought her up to be the son he didn't have, and she did ranch work and went on cattle drives. As the book begins, her father and her along with three men, Pete Winslow, a teen similar in age to her; Henry Finch, an man older than her father; and Charlie Rose, a quiet man returned from war. Their first night they are ambushed by cattle rustlers led by a man called Clay. The rustlers dealt with the men in a variety of ways and took Mattie with them. Clay intends to have his way with her, but Mattie won't go easily. 

Shortly after, a group of Texas Rangers come in and ensure Clay is dealt with. Mattie's father is thankful to their leader Franklin Cole, but Mattie doesn't like him, or respect him. When she finds herself married to him, she puts up with it, but over time, she finds herself thinking about leaving. 

The story doesn't wrap things up, but leads to the next novella in the series. 

Mattie is capable and observant, and knows her own mind. She doesn't like dishonesty whatever the reason, and I would find it interesting to follow her life. 

Goody Two Shoes

Goody Two Shoes by Janet Elizabeth Henderson

This novel takes place in a small Scottish town. American singer Josh McInnes has recently bought the small castle in town which had fallen into some disrepair and the original details were either covered or missing. Caroline Patterson has lived her whole life in Invertary and has almost given up on love. Her younger sister is living in the Middle East and currently expecting her second child. They are close, but haven't seen each other lately. Caroline is a woman who gets things done. She runs the community centre, and the library, and is on pretty much any committee going. 

Josh doesn't believe in falling in love. He sings about love, but has only experienced lust, not love. He loves the way his parents love each other, but they got married because his mother was pregnant with him. He thinks an arranged marriage is the way to go. He has asked his best friend and manager Mitch to pick a woman for him. He wants a partnership, a friendship, a lifelong commitment. 

When his friend sets up a meeting with Caroline, she thinks it is about renovation of the castle. When he explains his philosophy around marriage and proposes to her, at first she can't believe it. Then she negotiates. She gets to do whatever she wants regarding the castle (which she wants to bring it back to its original condition) and she will agree to marry him and have a family with him. 

At first they manage to keep it a secret within the town, except for Josh's parents. But then someone leaks the news and they find themselves under media scrutiny, something Caroline definitely isn't ready for. As the critiques of her life, her looks, and her fashion choices come in, things really get out of hand. 

Saving graces are the townspeople who love Caroline as their own. There is a group of retired men known as the domino boys, who meet regularly at the centre and who latch on to the wedding offering planning and security. Josh's parents, Andrew and Helen, have their own issues which come to the fore during their visit, and some of Josh's fans are a bit enthusiastic about changes to his life.

This novel is lighthearted and fun, with humour, escapades, and great lines. Both Josh and Caroline find themselves growing in ways they didn't expect, as the learn about each other. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and it is the second in a series set in this small town. 

Say You'll Be Mine

Say You'll Be Mine by Naina Kumar

This romance is very engaging. The narration does vary between the two main characters. The main female character, Meghna Raman, is a Dallas-area middle grade English teacher who has long aspired to write plays, and is working with her students to do the school's first production, My Fair Lady. Her parents and brother are all engineers and, in the eyes of her mother, engineering is the only profession worth doing. Meghna has received the speech on this many times, but her mother launches a new one now, convincing her to marry an engineer. Meghna's parents are a love match, and they've never proposed any introduction before, but she finds herself faced with an arranged marriage proposal, a rishta, now. Perhaps it is because she is nearing thirty without a serious relationship. 

Karthik is a mechanical engineer working in New York City for a large engineering firm. He likes his work, but has pushed off serious relationships and any discussion of them for years. He has finally made a deal with his mother to meet marriage possibilities for a certain time period on condition that if he doesn't find someone she won't bring it up again. And Karthik has no intention of finding someone. He has seen his parents' marriage and has no desire for anything like theirs in terms of a relationship. He has been trying to be as little like his father for most of his life. That's partially why he chose engineering instead of medicine, with his father teaching at NYCU medical school. 

The meeting, at Meghna's parents' house goes well, except for Karthik telling her that he has no intention of marrying anyone when the two of them have their one-on-one. Yet he finds himself telling his mother he needs time to think about her as a potential wife instead of just saying no. And then he digs himself in deeper yet. 

So when he contacts Meghna with a proposal to move ahead with a fake relationship, he has to find something that they both get out of it. And Meghna has a secret that only her best friend Ankita knows that might be the motivation she needs. 

As their story unfolds, it seems that there are more secrets, from Karthik, Ankita, and parents on both sides. 

I liked learning more about some aspects of Indian culture as well as seeing this plot unfold. The characters of Meghna and Karthik are ones with some depth, and we see their vulnerabilities as well as their strengths. I also liked the character of Paul, an intern at Karthik's company. 

I had trouble putting the book down as I needed to see how things worked out.
